Did you happen to watch the 2016 Olympic Marathon Trials in Los Angeles on Saturday? I was glued to the television. I was rooting for Meb to win, or at least be top three and of course my idol, Kara Goucher.
I love watching marathons on television and get so invested in the outcome. I was ecstatic to see Meb come in second place, and had a feeling he would be on the team. He looked so comfortable the whole marathon and made it look so easy! Watching their cadence makes me think they are running a 9 minute mile based on how comfortable they look. I can’t wait to watch him in Rio this summer!
As for the women’s marathon, I had a gut feeling Shalane and Desi would make the team, and I was really, really rooting for Kara. I have been following her for the past eight years and feel so invested in her racing career (yes, I know that sounds weird). Of course I don’t know her personally, but from reading her interviews, articles, Instragrams, and videos, I feel like I have a pretty good idea of what kind of person she is- and that is an admirable one.
I was heartbroken when she came in fourth place. Fourth place is amazing, but I know her goal was to make the team.

The whole time I was watching I had a very nervous feeling, mainly because I wanted Meb and Kara to make the team so bad. I also had a feeling of excitement. Anytime I watch a marathon I get extremely motivated and determined. I don’t have a marathon planned yet, but it probably won’t be until spring 2017 or fall 2017, due to baby! I would love to run a marathon this fall, it just is not realistic for me since I’ll have a 3 month old. I hope to to definitely run a half-marathon within the year, as that is a bit more realistic! I may run the Des Moines Half-Marathon this fall. I’ve never run the half there, mainly because I’ve always ran the full, but it’ll be a nice change for once!
Anyways, congrats to anyone who ran in the L.A. Marathon! The heat looked miserable!
