What do I do when I don’t run?

I often get asked if I workout everyday, or if I do other forms of cardio instead of running daily. Quick answer: no and yes!

I do not workout everyday because I need a physical and mental day of rest. I do not count walking Charlie as a workout, so I suppose that is the one thing I do on complete days off.

As far as the days I do not run (1-2 days per week) I use the elliptical or bike ride in the summer.

This form of exercise actually depends heavily on whether I am training or not. When I am training for a half or full marathon I am pretty strict about running 5-6 days per week and occasionally throw in some other aerobic exercise, but I never substitute running.

However, when I am not training (like now) I will often substitute running a day or two for another form of cardio.

This morning I went to the gym and did 30 minutes on the elliptical and 30 minutes of strength training. I have been running after school because the sun is out and it is much warmer!

The reason I workout twice a day is because I only workout from 5-6 in the morning and I can’t fit in too much in that hour, so I spend between 30-60 minutes after school running.

This morning I glanced at my phone and noticed NOW 47… which made me think back to my first NOW 1 cd… which then made me switch my Pandora station. Great decision!

The songs that played made me happy and I had flashbacks to my childhood. Great morning!

I did upper body today for strength training so tomorrow will be lower body.

Once I got home I made myself a quick smoothie because I showered and got ready for the day.

My smoothie consisted of:

-1 cup unsweetened almond milk

-5 frozen strawberries

-half scoop of vanilla whey protein

-2 tsps. unsweetened cacao power

It was delicious, and the strawberries evened out the bitter cacao powder.

I’m constantly hungry throughout the day so I keep snacks in my desk. I get to school around 7:20 to get stuff done before my kids come in at 8:05 so I have a Chobani yogurt (hooked on the banana/maple syrup/oatmeal right now) and either a cinnamon or blueberry Belvita (obsessed).

I also have string cheese in my mini fridge at school and drink water all day.

For lunch I typically have salads because they are easy and require to heating up at school.

My salad today has shredded carrots, cucumbers, avocado slices, jalapeño cheese, smoked turkey from the deli, and a little ranch. It was so easy to prepare at home and delicious.

I have another Belvita once my kids leave at 3, and by the time I leave my classroom around 4 I’m ready to run.

For dinner tonight I baked asparagus (in extra virgin olive oil) and sautéed a sweet potato in EVOO as well.

I haven’t had a snack yet but that will soon change!

I’ll most likely have some yogurt, fresh fruit and some soy milk.

I also love to drink Twinnings breakfast tea at night with a little soy milk.
