One thing I love about races is the ability to raise money for a charity or community. All of the races I run I make sure my money goes toward some form of charity.
When I run the Chicago Rock ‘n’ Roll 1/2 Marathon my money always goes towards “DetermiNation”, which gives money to cancer research. Click HERE for information on DetermiNation.
The three marathons I have run in Des Moines and the Quad Cities have also gone to local charities within each city. Each race I run I make sure I give to charity, and not the pockets of the race organizers.
I host a local race here in Ottumwa in the fall called “Run to Fund” and all of the proceeds go to our local trails system.
There are many large well-known 5k’s that do not support charity. Instead the money goes into the directors’ pockets and to marketing costs. While those races can be fun, and they are getting people off the couch and exercising, I personally prefer to run races where I know the money will go to a good cause.
I ran a 5k yesterday here in Ottumwa that was put on the the high school’s Interact Club. My friend and her students did a fantastic job organizing the event, and all of the proceeds went to purchase school supplies for students in Sierra Leon.
When choosing a race to participate in make sure to find out where your money is going and what it supports.
